Level Up Japanese ("we," "us") respects your privacy. This Policy explains what personal information we collect, how we use it, and your choices. We process data in line with Japan's Act on the Protection of Personal Information (APPI) where it applies, and other laws in your region when relevant.

Account data: name, email address, password (stored as a secure hash), and role (learner or admin).

Study profile: target JLPT level, estimated level, placement results, study goals, streak, and preferences you set in onboarding or settings.

Learning activity: lesson progress, quiz and mock test attempts, scores, review history, skill mastery, study plan tasks, and timestamps.

AI interactions (optional): questions you send to the AI Teacher or explanation features, and related context (for example, lesson or question IDs), when you use those features with a live AI provider enabled.

Technical data: IP address, browser type, device information, and cookies or similar technologies needed for authentication and security.

We use personal information to:

• Provide and personalize the Service (content level, study plan, reminders)
• Authenticate users and prevent fraud or abuse
• Generate progress analytics and adaptive recommendations
• Operate optional AI features you request
• Improve reliability, security, and product quality
• Comply with legal obligations

Depending on your location, we rely on performance of our contract with you, legitimate interests (security, analytics, product improvement), and consent where required (for example, optional marketing or non-essential cookies).

We do not sell your personal information. We may share data with service providers who help us run the Service, such as:

• Hosting and database providers
• AI providers (for example Anthropic or OpenAI) when you use live AI features — only the content needed to generate a response
• Email or infrastructure vendors, if enabled in the future

These providers are bound by confidentiality and data-processing obligations. We may also disclose information if required by law or to protect rights, safety, and security.

Data may be processed in Japan or in countries where our providers operate. When we transfer data internationally, we use appropriate safeguards such as standard contractual clauses or equivalent measures where required.

We retain account and study data while your account is active and for a reasonable period afterward to resolve disputes, enforce terms, and meet legal requirements. You may request deletion of your account and associated data; we will honor requests subject to lawful retention needs (for example, security logs or tax records).

We use industry-standard measures such as hashed passwords, HTTPS in production, and access controls for admin functions. No method of transmission or storage is 100% secure; please use a strong, unique password.

Depending on applicable law, you may have the right to access, correct, delete, or export your personal information, restrict or object to certain processing, and withdraw consent where processing is consent-based. To exercise these rights, contact us at the address below. You may also lodge a complaint with a supervisory authority in your country.

We use essential cookies and similar technologies for session management and authentication. We do not use third-party advertising cookies in the current version of the Service. You can control cookies through your browser settings; disabling essential cookies may prevent login.

The Service is not directed at children under 13. We do not knowingly collect personal information from children under 13. If you believe we have done so, contact us and we will delete the information promptly.

We may update this Policy from time to time. We will post the revised version on this page and update the "Last updated" date. Significant changes may be notified by email or in-app notice where appropriate.
